Taliban’s shadow governor for eastern Kunar province was among a dozen militants killed in an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) drone strike in Shigal district on Monday, officials said.
Abdul Zahir Sapi, the administrative chief of the district, said Mullah Qasim Sabari, the Taliban-nominated governor, Qari Usman, the rebel head for Shigal, and a number of other fighters came under drone attack in Chowgam locality. The militants were planning to stage attacks on polling centres in the province, he added.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkheli, the police chief, confirmed 12 militants were killed in the airstrike. The militants were hit when they were crossing the Durand Line into Pakistan, he added.
