Following a US-brokered deal, Britain Foreign Secretary William Hague on Sunday welcomed Afghan presidential election audit and agreement to establish a government of national unity.
In a statement Hague said: “I congratulate the two Afghan presidential candidates on reaching agreement, and for putting the interests of the Afghan people first.”
He said that he hoped the audit of all the votes would enable Afghans to have confidence in the electoral process and its outcome. The UK would support efforts to ensure the audit was robust and meets international standards.
“I also welcome the commitment that the eventual winner will establish a government of national unity. I congratulate Secretary Kerry for his part in reaching this vital agreement. We look forward to welcoming the Afghan government and international community to the NATO Summit in Wales and the London Conference on Afghanistan later this year," he concluded.
