Karate National Team Selection Competition Kicks Off

karataThe selection competition for the national Karate team, that will participate in the Asian championships, kicked off in Kabul Taekwondo Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The Afghanistan Karate Federation said that the aim is to select four people to take part in the Asian competition championships which will be held in Japan in September.

Competitors will participate in five weight categories and four will be selected.

"The top four athletes in any weight will be selected and sent to the Asian Karate Championships in September which will be held in Japan," said Abdul Mahbob Sarwari acting-head of the Karate Federation.

"The top three [in each weight category] will compete with each other and one person will be selected for each weight [category] for the Asian competition," said Mohammad Tamim Faqiri a national karate team member.

"In five weight [categories] the top four will be selected for Asian competitions, another member of the karate team, Sayed Amiri said.

The 13th Asian Karate Championships will be held in September in Japan and four person will go to take part in from Afghanistan.

Karate – first launched in 1975 in Afghanistan. In 1989 it became an officially recognized sport and was recognized as an Olympic sport.

Currently, more than ten thousand athletes practice Karate in 26 provinces in Afghanistan.
