Marja-clearing-operationIn a recent press conference, Helmand governor spokesperson Mohammad Omar Zowak announced that insurgents have been defeated in Marjah district, and Saipan, Bolak Panj, Koro Char Rahi areas are now cleared of the Taliban.

The Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) launched the clearing operation with the support of the Afghan Air Force to restore law and order in Marjah. "The ANDSF pushed the Taliban out of Marjah where locals have resumed their normal lives in peace," Mr. Zowak said.

The spokesperson Mr. Zowak further explained the ANDSF's ongoing operations in neighbouring Nad Ali and Chahi Anjir districts. "Taliban have placed Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) on the roads, but in these current operations, our ANDSF engineering units are defusing them," he said.

Colonel Padsha Gul Bakhtyar of 215 Maiwand Corps told Sada e Azadi that 12 insurgents including the Taliban commanders were killed in the Marjah operations, and a number of mortars and machine guns were seized. "Our Afghan Air Force also killed three more insurgents who were trying to plant IEDs on the roadside in Terekh Nawor area," the Colonel said.

Locals returning home in Marjah found their properties destroyed and looted by the insurgents. They thanked the ANDSF and asked them not allow the Taliban in their areas ever again.
