Good governance plays a vital role in promoting development and democracy heard participants at a UNAMA-backed workshop in Zaranj, the provincial capital of southwestern Nimroz province.
Mohammad Qasim Khadri, the deputy governor, said “good governance is important in socio-economic development and is a key element in promoting democratic values, gender equality, transparency and inclusive elections.”
Mr. Khadri said it is important that we understand and support the relationship between government institutions, the provincial council, civil society organizations -- including youth groups -- and the general public.
Around 40 people attended the one-day workshop, including representatives of civil society -- covering areas such as women’s rights and youth -- and local government officials. The event highlighted the importance of good governance in supporting peace and stability, and contributing to a positive relationship between government, civil society and the public.
Mr. Rohullah Hidayat, head of the Nimroz local government-NGO working group, said that the workshop was a good illustration of how civil society and local government work together and are committed to good governance principles.
The workshop was the first of its kind organized by UNAMA in Nimroz province and sets the groundwork for ongoing dialogue on good governance.
Nimroz province is largely agricultural, although the shared border with neighbouring Iran means that trade makes a significant contribution to the economy.
UNAMA is mandated to support the Afghan Government and the people of Afghanistan as a political mission that provides good offices; promotes coherent development support by the international community; supports the process of peace and reconciliation; monitors and promotes human rights and the protection of civilians in armed conflict; promotes good governance; and encourages regional cooperation.
