Two million locally produced saplings would be planted in northern Badakhshan province as part of the spring tree plantation campaign kicked off on Sunday.
Agricultureinfo-icon director Mohammad Alam Alami, who inaugurated the tree plantation drive, said they would usually plant one million trees each year but this their number had been increased to two million both fruit and non-fruit trees.
He said the previously planted trees had been watered and looked after and only a fewer number of them had dried.
The official said tree plantation had become a culture in Badakhshan and the province no longer needed imported saplings.
A resident of Faizabad, Abdul Qadir, said his half an acre of fruit orchard had 200 trees which produced enough fruits. He said people also visited his orchard to eat fruits and he offered them the fruit free of cost to earn a reward in the hereafter life.
In cooperation with related organizations, the provincial agriculture plans to plant 100,000 trees in government departments, schools and roadsides in the new solar yearinfo-icon that begins on March 22.
The agriculture director said farmers planned to grow orchards on 250 acres of land next solar year and they would be distributed seedlings.
